Franklin D. Roosevelts First Inaugural Address (4 March 1933)

This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself -- nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. In every dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory. I am convinced that you will again give that support to leadership in these critical days.

In such a spirit on my part and on yours we face our common difficulties. They concern, thank God, only material things. Values have shrunken to fantastic levels; taxes have risen; our ability to pay has fallen; government of all kinds is faced by serious curtailment of income; the means of exchange are frozen in the currents of trade; the withered leaves of industrial enterprise lie on every side; farmers find no markets for their produce; the savings of many years in thousands of families are gone.

More important, a host of unemployed citizens face the grim problem of existence, and an equally great number toil with little return. Only a foolish optimist can deny the dark realities of the moment.

Yet our distress comes from no failure of substance. . . . Nature still offers her bounty and human efforts have multiplied it. Plenty is at our doorstep, but a generous use of it languishes in the very sight of the supply. Primarily this is because rulers of the exchange of mankind's goods have failed through their own stubbornness and their own incompetence . . . Practices of the unscrupulous money changers stand indicted in the court of public opinion, rejected by the hearts and minds of men. . . .

The money changers have fled from their high seats in the temple of our civilization. We may now restore that temple to the ancient truths. The measure of the restoration lies in the extent to which we apply social values more noble than mere monetary profit. . . .

Restoration calls, however, not for changes in ethics alone. This Nation asks for action, and action now.

  In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow-countrymen, and not in mine, is the momentous issue of civil war. The Government will not assail you. You can have no conflict without being yourselves the aggressors. You have no oath registered in heaven to destroy the Government, while I shall have the most solemn one to "preserve, protect, and defend it."

  I am loath to close. We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.

Is Jesus equal to or lesser than?-

Order of creation-
Here is the order in the first (Genesis 1), the Priestly tradition:

Day 1: Sky, Earth, light
Day 2: Water, both in ocean basins and above the sky(!)
Day 3: Plants
Day 4: Sun, Moon, stars (as calendrical and navigational aids)
Day 5: Sea monsters (whales), fish, birds, land animals, creepy-crawlies (reptiles, insects, etc.)
Day 6: Humans (apparently both sexes at the same time)
Day 7: Nothing (the Gods took the first day off anyone ever did)

Note that there are "days," "evenings," and "mornings" before the Sun was created. Here, the Deity is referred to as "Elohim," which is a plural, thus the literal translation, "the Gods." In this tale, the Gods seem satisfied with what they have done, saying after each step that "it was good."

The second one (Genesis 2), the Yahwist tradition, goes:

Eve, the first woman (from Adam's rib)

Righteous live?-
Ps.92:12: "The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree."

George W's Next Brilliant Plan

     Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Bush has done it again. No, I'm not talking about his attempts to get the Senate to pass an anti-Gay resolution. I'm not even talking about his continued inaction concerning the quagmire his wars have become. No no, I'm talking about his newest and apparently most brilliant education bill. Apparently he is not content with screwing all thinkers above neanderthalic capacity with his wife's smack-on-the-forehead quality No Child Left Behind Act, but now he has taken school finance under his wing as well. The terms of the bill are as follows; the national government will fund all education from grade kindergarten through 8 (first of all, with what money??). But this is where it gets good. The catch is that the government gets the privelidge of approving all cirriculum for the aforementioned grades. You did not read that wrong, the government could soon be approving cirriculum. Which means that with Bush marshalling his well-trained religious right, the next generation of first graders will be learning from HIS idea of cutting-edge technology... The Bible. The man will stop at nothing to legislate Christianity. He goes on about abortion forever, tries to legistlate against gay marraige (which the great state of Ohio has already done, bravo) and now with him at the head of k-8 education, science and all semblance of darwinism are the first things to go. I hope the Democrats have the sense to stall this bill until the midterm elections, when surely the people will return Congress to them. If not however, lookout for the camera crews soon to take up residence in your home, at Bush's bidding.
